Since I moved from Bend to Portland in January I've been really intrigued by the consent activity of the urban Portland scene. Most of you know my work as concentrating on the Central Oregon Landscape but I have painted a few City Scapes. I am excited about working on some more especially now with the autumn trees that are turning red, orange and yellow. I've been going on field trips around downtown, the pearl district and the 23rd street area trying to capture the city life in film as reference to take back to my studio on Lovejoy. I hope to have a body of this new work soon so stay tuned.

This is a Monotype of the Devils Garden area. I always try to get there in late Autumn to paint as the colors are amazing. One week after this was painted it snowed a foot and the road is now closed for the season. This is one of my smaller monotypes at 19"x24". Anyone that's followed my work knows this is one of my favorite areas to paint. I have done numerous paintings of it. The first time I painted it was with my daughter. She must of been about 11 or 12. We sat together and painted until she got board and then I watched as she ran through the meadow catching frog and splashing in the water. It's one of my very favorite memories I have with her. I really think that is why this place is so special to me.

After my last two shows I was totally burned out. I couldn't even force myself to get back into my studio. I was completely with out inspiration. I just didn't have any desire to paint another landscape. Then I was lying in bed looking at one of my daughters amazing paintings and I started cropping it into interesting pieces. Then it hit me, why don't I take some of my favorite paintings and my favorite parts of those paintings and use those as a reference for something totally new. I have been having so much fun again (finally). I can't wait to paint more. I'd love to hear any feed back you may have so please comment:)

Eric and I went for a walk in the Metolius River Basin a couple weeks ago. They were doing a controlled burn that was just barely smoldering. It made for the most amazing lighting. This is such a beautiful place in the Autumn. I've been here to pick huckleberries and take photos but I have never painted here. It was such a beautiful morning. I painted a little then would take a break and sit, eat huckleberries, listen to the creek and soak up the sun. The painting still has a lot of work yet but it's not really about the finished product but the experience of being in such a beautiful place and being completely present. I'm hoping to hold on to that peace for a while.

One of the blogs I follow is my sister-n-law's. She is an amazing writer and values the written word before all else. I am in awe of her talent. I love this post as I think it says so much about the sad state of art in our schools. I have such a fear that my nephews natural creativity will be replaced by societies rigid conformity. Luckily, I don't think his Mother will let that happen.

Since the class I took at Sitka, I've been painting mostly with Oils and wax medium that the instructor uses. He gave us all a little of the medium and I had enough left over to do some small paintings at home. I finally ran out and was unable to order more soon enough so I thought maybe I could make my own. I was able to get bees wax and Alkyd. I grated the bees wax and mixed it with mineral spirits until it softened and then I added the Alkyd until it looked right. It felt and looked just like the stuff that we used in class. The real test will be how it dries and whether or not it flakes off.

I changed this quite allot. It was way too busy before. That's the cool thing about this medium. It's really easy to remove layers and rework without it looking over worked. I think I'm happy with it now.

This is the last painting from the Oil and Wax Abstract Painting workshop I did. I was really trying to abstract the trees in 2 different ways but yet still have the painting read well as a whole. The instructor, Allen Cox, does this so wonderfully. If you haven't taken a class at Sitka yet you should. I was so sad to leave today. Can't wait to go back next year and take this class and maybe another one.

Not sure this is done yet. I was trying to play with pattern and texture. Allen makes it look so easy. He really is a master at what he does. I'm looking forward to coming back next year to learn more.

Last painting I'll be working on in class tomorrow. So sad it's over already. What a great experience.

Workshop at Sitka Center for Art and Ecology

I'm taking a painting class in Otis Oregon on the Oregon coast at Sitka. It is a class called
Abstract Oil Painting with Oil and Wax in Alkyd Medium. It's taught by Allen Cox.
I'm really enjoying the class and the people in the class. Sitka is such a beautiful place!!!

This is the last painting I worked on today. I'd still like to add a little light in the horizon but need to wait for the paint to dry.

This is the 2nd painting. I'm not done with this one yet. I need to wait for the paints to dry. I think I'm putting them on a little too thick.

First Painting of the workshop. Got a little wild but it was fun figuring out the medium.

It's funny how I'm more affected by the bad one. I need to learn to concentrate less on my mistakes and more on my successes.

I find it interesting how creativity runs in families. Is it nature or nurture or a little of both? My mom and her brother are both artistic. My mom is a wonderful painter even though she doesn't paint as often as she should. My uncle is a self taught sculptor. I doubt that they were exposed to much art as children. My sister and I are both artists. I remember my mom taking a few painting classes when I was very young but she really didn't paint much after that. I don't really remember her encouraging my artistic ability ever. My own children are extremely talented artists. Carlie is working on her MFA at American University in DC and Anders is working on his MFA in Photography at Art Academy of San Francisco. As opposed to my childhood, I highly encouraged my children's creativity from a very early age. They would go out painting with me on location. Carlie would bring her paints and Anders would bring his camera. They also would paint next to me at home. It was just something we would do. They grew up with their framed artwork on our walls along side mine and other artists. I wonder if my mother and I had had more encouragement as children how would our painting careers be different? Would it have mattered?
